Hey there everyone!

Some of us are finishing up with midterm exams, others are busy working diligently at our jobs, and still others are starting up a new semester!

We have a lot of things planned for the next several months...

Monthly Pro-Life Prayer Vigil: Saturday, January 28th
We've committed ourselves to praying at the last abortion clinic in our Diocese once a month. Same time (6am-12pm). Meet in the Church parking lot for 5:50am.

SAYG Meeting: Thursday, February 9th
Lots to discuss/plan! Bring your calendars, notebooks, and ideas! Starts with a Holy Hour at 5:15. Meeting begins at 6:30 and ends by 8:30pm.

Fat Tuesday Fun Day!: Tuesday, February 21st
Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on February 22nd! We're going to go BOWLING on the 21st. It's during winter break, so it shouldn't be a problem...
We're meeting at the parking lot at 2pm!!! After bowling, we'll be heading to the parish hall for some food and games.

Service Day: Saturday, February 25th
Christ teaches us to put our faith into action! We'll start the day with Mass at 8am, followed by breakfast. From there, we'll head to elderly parishioner's homes that need some working on... Whether it be to help them clean out a basement, or to help clean their kitchen, we'll be there as Christ's helpers to spread His love, joy, and compassion! After we're done we'll head back to the parish hall for some sharing of experiences and of course, food! MORE INFO COMING...

Our first ever Ignite was a huge success! So huge, in fact, that we're planning on having another one =). Ignite
will start with dinner @ 6pm and will end at 9pm.

5th Annual SAYG Pilgrimage Walk: Saturday, June 23rd

At our meeting last night we finally decided on who we'd like our patron saints to be!
After much brainstorming we decided on twelve... Yes, you read correctly... 12 ::gulp::. Bear with us, an explanation is in order...

As a YG, we like to work together to make sure everything functions sMoOtHly (hopefully). Planning events for 15-25 adolescents/young adults who are all so completely, beautifully, unique can be a struggle and a ton of work when only spearheaded by one or two people O_o.

So we – along with our Pastor, Fr. Roger J. Landry – came up with a plan about a year ago.

We'd have committees! Each committee would focus on one of our YG pillars (presented in no particular order) of prayer, service, social events, learning the faith, and fundraising. It would be each particular committee's job to brainstorm and help plan for events pertaining to their expertise. We're still trying to work out some kinks, but we've taken a liking to it.

Where were we...? Oh, yes! Patron saints! So, here's the thing... We need help (as is tradition) O_O. We've been meaning to pick patron saints from whom we could learn and who would help us with our duties. Guess what? We now have our OFFICIAL patrons for each of our "YG pillar committees" ::tear:: =').

Praying at Abortion Clinic

Because of unforeseen situations coming up for some YG members who are regulars at these events, our monthly commitment to praying outside an abortion clinic has been canceled on November 19.

We will instead plan for November 26th... We're meeting at the church parking lot for 6:00am and leaving at around 6:15am.

After praying at the clinic for an hour or so we'll be heading to Mass at a nearby parish and from there will pick up some breakfast. Bring some $$$ for food!

Road Trip!!! Or something like that...

This weekend is our annual Parish Christmas Bazaar (help is needed!). Any help you can give is greatly appreciated! Also, on Saturday we're meeting at 8am/9am (Mass and afterward) for a road trip... Across New Bedford... To deliver brown bags!!

That's right, we're delivering brown paper bags to homes in the community asking if they'd fill them for our Food Drive to take place next weekend. We'll be picking up the (hopefully) filled bags on Saturday (Nov. 12) @ 9am.

Back to Business!

It's been almost two months since we were with the Holy Father in Madrid! Wow. We've changed for the better and the graces we've received have continued to sustain us as we started back up at school. Our schedule has gotten pretty packed...

Saturday, October 22: Soccer Day (probably the last one before spring!)

Meet at church parking lot for 11am. We car pool to the field and are usually back at St. Anthony's for around 3pm. More details to follow.

Friday, November 4: LaSalette Extreme

Excellent nights filled with Catholic speakers, adoration, confession, and praise&worship music, followed by a social hour. Leave the parking lot after the 5:15pm Mass (i.e., around 5:45pm) and carpool to LaSalette. We’d stop along the way for a quick bite to eat before heading there. Should return at around 10:30pm.

Saturday, November 5: Preparation for Annual Food Drive

We're going to be dropping off brown paper grocery bags along with a personal note from the YG and a bulletin (which includes awesome Jesus articles and Mass times... YAY for evangelization!!!) off on doorsteps around the city. The point? Let people know we exist, bring them Jesus (in a direct and not-so-direct way), and get them involved in feeding those in need from our Food Pantry!

We'll be meeting in the back hallway (near our YG closet) to cut/staple notes and brown bags together. After all the bags are assembled we'll pile into cars and drive around dropping the bags off (no worries, we got this cleared with the NBPD).

Thursday, November 10: SAYG Monthly Meeting

Our monthly meeting that starts with Adoration at 5:15pm. We go over events, plan activities, make decisions, etc. We'll be picking our "Secret St. Nick Prayer Recipients" (i.e., the whole palanca bit we did last year) at this meeting; BE THERE!!!!

Friday, November 11: Ignite

We're starting something new in the Youth Group!!! "Ignite" is a night of community, friendship, prayer, learning about our faith, and goal setting/character building; it should be great! It'll start at 4:15 with Adoration followed by Mass at 5:15 and will end at around8:30pm. Dinner will be provided; come for the whole event or part of it!

Saturday, November 12: Annual Food Drive Food Pick-Up

We'll be picking up the (hopefully) filled brown bags from each home (see "Saturday, November 5") and dropping them off at the Parish. Meet at St. Anthony's for 9am (don't forget, 8am Mass!) and will head out from there.

We apologize for the delay in posts, the pilgrimage left us exhausted (but happy!) at the end of each day, and there wasn't always wi-fi available. Still, it's never too late to share our experience, right?

The next stop on our journey was the bautiful city of Leon, to see the cathedral.

Then we stayed at Valladolid, where we celebrated mass the following morning at an Augustinian Monastery.

Later, we learned about prayer outside of the tomb of St. John of the Cross

And then to El Valle de los Caidos, easily the most somber and intimidating church we saw. It was a very moving visit.

Here We Go!

It's finally August 12th! Today, our Youth Group will begin our big pilgrimage to Portugal and Spain, ending with World Youth Day! Today, we'll be picking up a flight from Boston to New Jersey, then from New Jersey to Lisbon, Portugal. It's the day we've been waiting for now for quite a while, and we'd like to take this chance to thank all the benefactors, volunteers, parents, friends, and family that have helped make our trip possible. Thank you so much, and if anybody reading this has any intentions at all you'd like us to pray for, let us know by comment or email (saygnb@gmail.com). Seven Days and Counting...

~~Good Morning!!!~~ ¡¡Buenos Días!!

Can you believe it? After years of waiting, thousands of prayers, countless fundraisers... We're leaving for World Youth Day IN SEVEN (yes, you read that right) DAYS!!

From the bottom of our hearts, THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU!!!! How could we ever repay all of you who have supported us spiritually, emotionally, and financially? We wouldn't be here if it weren't for your GENEROUS support. Please be assured that all of you are in our prayers and will continue to be at every stop during the Pilgrimage.

This event will be huge. And we don't just mean number wise (there are over 1 MILLION awesome young people who are signed up for WYD2011!). Christ will be reaching out and changing our hearts forever; we can feel it! We're ready.

We're ready to meet Jesus Christ and be convicted of His love. We're ready to take ownership of our beautiful Catholic faith and "live lives worthy of our calling" as St. Paul urges us. But this isn't enough. Why? Because our families, friends, schools, and cities need Him, too. When you have Jesus you have everything and we're ready to be His heart, hands, and feet in a world that's so desperately in need of His Love!

Mother Teresa is one of our favorites and it's as if we can hear her say this to us directly, "Keep the joy of loving God in your heart and share this joy with all you meet especially your family. Be holy – let us pray."

In a nutshell, we just want to be superheroes and help Jesus save the world! Is that too much to ask?! Okay, okay, maybe "ninja" is more our style... Will you join us? We need all the "ninjas" we can get... ;-).

Pilgrimage Walk 2011

It's summer, and you know what that means...time for our 4th Annual Pilgrimage Walk! This Saturday, we will be meeting up at the church for 8:00 Mass. From there, we'll start our 10 mile journey to all of the churches in the New Bedford Deanery! Lunch will be at Charlie's Pizza, and youth group parents will provide a dinner for when we get back to Saint Anthony's (around 6:00 pm). We also usually have a parent drive ahead of us to each church with refreshments to keep us hydrated and energized!
As this is a pilgrimage, every youth group member partipating will receive an intention sheet. Your job is to get people to put their name and whatever/whomever they want us to pray for on that paper, and carry it with you from church to church. At every House of God, we kneel (usually in front of the tabernacle), go down everybody's intention lists, and then say a litany to the patron of that church.
Come prepared for a day of prayer, bonding, and...lots and LOTS of walking!

P.S. If anybody wants to help with food, or volunteer to drive ahead of us, let a youth group member know!

Spaghetti Supper & Sock Hop Tomorrow!

Tomorrow night (Saturday, April 30th) is our parish’s second annual Spaghetti Supper/Sock Hop which we are co-sponsoring with the food pantry. Doors will open at 5:30. Dinner will be served beginning at 6:00 and will be followed by dancing to music from the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. Costumes are encouraged. There will be a hula hoop competition and bubble blowing contest. Artwork and more has been donated for an auction. Tickets are $8.00 for adults, $4.00 for children (12 and under) and $25 for a family of four or more. Tickets are available from all youth group members and food pantry volunteers. Tickets may also be purchased at the door. So get your poodle skirts and saddle shoes back out and come on to the hop! Hope to see you there!

This Saturday, February 26th is a day to mark on your calendars! We will be hosting a talent show in the church hall, all proceeds benefitting our goal to make it to World Youth Day. Admission is $5 (free for parishioners) and doors will open at 6:30 for the silent auction. The show is at 7, concessions will he sold, and it should be a fun evening! Come by to support the contestants and out youth group!!!

Walk-a-thon

A reminder that our Pilgrimage Walk-a-thon is coming up this Saturday to help raise money for our going to World Youth Day in Madrid, Spain next year. We will be meeting for the 8am Mass at Saint Anthony's and sitting together. Bring your pledge sheets and $$$ with you to mass. Please wear your blue youth group t-shirts and comfortable walking shoes. Dress appropriately and feel free to bring a sweatshirt to be put in the van. Cell phones are permitted to be kept on vibrate in case of emergencies only. No ipods or other devices are allowed as this is a Pilgrimage. We will be arriving at the at approximately 5:30 for a simple dinner.

We will be having a soccer day on July 24th @ Livesey Memorial Park in Fairhaven due to Jocelyn's recent case of "soccer fever" We will be meeting at the chuch parking lot @ 9:00 am or if you don't want to go to the church parking lot you could go to the park @ 9:30 and we all should be there, please respond if you coming or not. Please comment on what food you will be bringing, if any. Here is a short list of items you will need to bring:

Tropical Smoothie Fundraiser

On July 21st, 4:00-8:00 our Youth Group will be having a fundraiser to raise money for World Youth Day 2011, at Tropical Smoothis (85A Faunce Corner Mall Road, North Darthmouth) Our youth group will get 20% of the profits made. The menu for Tropical Smoothie is attached to the title Tropical Smoothie Fundraiser because they don't only sell smoothies!!!!! They have awesome flatbreads, wraps, sandwiches, and that sort of delicious stuff. Also you have to take a flier with you which is right on the bottom of this post in order that 20% of whatever you spend gets donated to the youth group. To get the flier simply right click on it, click save to pictures, then go to pictures click on the flier one and then print it. Hope to see you all there!!!!

Whatcha gonna do...???

Hope everyone had a great week. So... in order to prepare for the next meeting I'm throwing out some thoughts. I'll be looking for:

1. People to Plan Fundraisers (all different kinds)... this means YOU do all the planning and work with someone else in a "team" to plan it from start to finish.
Also need more ideas for "Fun"draisers!!!

2. Someone to help to write out "step by step guides" or "check off lists" to HELP members to competently plan events from start to finish

3. Those interested in learning how to edit and post photos on the blog or Shutterfly site.

4. Someone with much better time management skills to keep track of the "Calendar" and help plan events, send reminders, touch base with Fr. Landry to see if there are conflicts within the Parish schedule, Send info to Luann Connolly to put in the monthly calendar, put in bulletin announcements in a timely fashion, keep us on task, etc...

5. Someone who's good at dealing with money and planning. We need to look at what we've raised, and what we need to raise until World Youth Day and figure out how much to aim for every month to help us figure out our goals (short and long term)... and someone to keep track so I basically don't have to deal with money.

6. Someone to take notes and put them on the computer and email them to members not able to attend... I seriously need a secratary. I also need someone to check on the previous months notes and make sure we (I) kept on task with what was brought up.

7. Someone to do grocery shopping for the meetings or volunteer to bring drinks, snacks and food for each meeting

8. Someone to help maintain the blog (the more to spread the tasks around... the easier)

9. Someone who likes to shop

10. Someone to help the DeSouzas in writing "Thank you cards" and "Birthday cards" so a few other people are keeping track

11. Someone to Inventory the Youth Group closet and figure out what we need to reorder/purchase before movie nights, etc...

12. Someone to help with mailing letters/posters to other Parishes to invite them to come to the movie nights and other events.

13. Someone who would like to have a "home" movie night... it's about time we all get together informally to chill out with Popcorn. I can do it at my place when school gets out... but I don't have a drop down screen or the most comfortable seating. Anyone want to donate some chairs or pillows to the green room?

14. Someone to help plan another CORI night in June or July (Contact Fr. Landry, Bulletin Announcement, Get materials from Phil Martin, etc...)

15. Someone to make phone calls and invite people to come to events/meetings.

16. Someone to help begin the process of getting a play underway. Joan of Arc anyone?

17. Someone to do monthly pro-life formation talks (20min)

...well, I guess just need lots of someones to do a bunch of different things (even more than is listed here) and would love your input about how to help the Youth Group be even better and more efficient than it is, without being overwhelming for any ONE person or family.

Pope Pius X Award

Before I begin, I’d like to congratulate my fellow Pope Pius X Award recipients. I think I speak for us all when I say that calling this an honor is a huge understatement! The best part for me is knowing that I actually am helping, that I’m making a difference, however small that may be. Receiving such recognition for this, however, totally caught me off guard!
I have to start off by saying that I wouldn’t have come this far in my faith if it weren’t for my fellow parishioners at St. Anthony’s, and for my family. My pastor, the church staff, and the CCD program made me feel welcome when I started practicing the faith again. I have to thank the Youth Group in particular for being a second family to me! All of these people give me an amazing example and inspire me to truly live the faith. Between them and my family, I have all the support I need!
I suppose what I’m trying to say is that an important part of our faith is the people who share it with us. Brothers and Sisters, it’s true that the Church has been facing challenges. As I’ve heard time and time again, “It’s not easy being faithful in this day and age”. However, I think that these trials have made us stronger, more resolute in our beliefs. And it’s these beliefs that draw us together as one Church, a Church I’m thankful each and every day to be a part of.
We have faced and overcome many difficulties through history, from the founding of our church up until today. This is one of the lasting characteristics of the Catholic Church: our perseverance. However, that perseverance can’t be mistaken with remaining stagnant; as each and every one of us grows deeper in our beloved faith, the church as a whole moves forward. This is especially true among the Catholic youth. We work not just to learn, but also to put into practice, our faith. We follow the marvelous examples given to us by the saints and hope to also lead by our own example. We work with a zeal that is only matched by our fervent desire to see changes for the better in the world we live in. While some goals seem far-off, through Our Lord’s graces we continue on toward them, helping each other along the way and maintaining the unity of our Church.
We have all been put on this earth for different reasons. God has a plan for each and every one of us, a plan that goes far beyond anything we can imagine. The best thing any of us can do is look up to Him and say, “Lord, I don’t know everything. I don’t have the strength to go at life alone. I need to follow the path you have set for me, and I need you by my side every step of the way. I trust in what you have planned for me, and I want to accomplish the goals you have set for me”.
It’s not as easy as it sounds to truly hand ourselves over to God’s will. We need to trust in Him. We need to be open to His Plan. We need to recognize that we need His grace to persevere. Most of all, we need to put Our Lord’s will above our own; it’s the least we can do for Him, after all that He has done for us!

In all the Youth Group and Food Pantry made $2,400, that was divided between both groups and we are getting $1,200. To all of those who were not able to come, we missed you!!! Eucharistic Vigil for Priests

Our Lady's Chapel, in downtown New Bedford, will be hosting a Eucharistic Prayer Vigil for Priests in honor of this "Year of the Priests". The Vigil will take place on Friday April 16th, 6pm-12am, Saturday April 17th, 6pm-12am, and Sunday April 18th, from 1pm-6pm. Each hour of this Vigil will be offered up for the different priests in the New Bedford Deanery. All parishioners and friends are invited to attend the Holy Hour. Fr. Landry and Fr. Nick have been assigned the 2-3pm hour on Sunday. There is a sign up sheet in the sacristy. Please come to this event to pray for our Parish priests, who work so hard for the greater glory of God. This is something that will only take an hour, but which will have a lifetime of graces for our priests. Hope to see you all there!!!

Holy Thursday 7 Churches

We have been invited to join the Youth Group from St. Francis Xavier to participate in the Holy Thursday tradition commonly referred to as "The Seven Churches". I typically spend the night in prayer at St. Anthony's but if enough of you would like to travel from church to church together, I'd be happy to change my plans and pilgrimage with you. They are getting a bus, but need to find out a count from us, so please let me know if you'd like to participate.

Here's some info on the tradition (which usually takes place in cities with many churches. I used to do it regularly but we walked in a large group and sang along the way, praying rosaries and litanies as well):

The tradition of visiting seven churches on Holy Thursday is an ancient practice, probably originating in Rome, where early pilgrims visited the seven pilgrim churches as penance. They are Saint John Lateran, Saint Peter, Saint Mary Major, Saint Paul-outside-the-Walls, Saint Lawrence Outside the Walls, Holy Cross-in-Jerusalem, and traditionally Saint Sebastian Outside the Walls. Pope John Paul II replaced St. Sebastian with the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Divine Love for the jubilee year of 2000
In the Philippines, the faithful carry out this tradition of Visita Iglesia (Spanish: Church visits) and some expand it to include fourteen churches and say the Stations of the Cross, with one station in each church.

Providence Bruins Game

This coming Friday, March 26th, the youth group will be going to a Providence Bruins game. Ticket prices are $5 for parishioners and $13 for non-parishioners. The bus will be leaving at 6:00 pm sharp, immediately following the 5:15 mass, so be there early. Please let Marijanna know if you are able to come. Everyone is sure to have a great time!!!

March Movie Night

On Saturday, March 13th, we will be hosting our monthly "Movie Night" in the St. Anthony's Parish Hall(enter by the Nye St. door). in order to accomodate families with younger children the movie time is at 5:30pm, following the 4pm mass, so that families will be assured of getting home early. As usual concessions will be available and admission is free.

Pro-Life Talk

Our very own Jocelyn will be speaking this evening at St. Anthony's Ladies group. She will be giving a pro-life talk (which we all know she's awesome at!) Let's show her our support this evening and come hear her share her wisdom. The talk will take place downstairs at 6:30pm.

Monthly Meeting

It's that time of the month again!!! On Thursday, March 4th, we will behaving our monthly youth group meeting!!! The meeting will follow the 5:15 Holy Hour at Saint Anthony's. After the Holy Hour we will be going to Marijanna's house for the meeting. Please tryto make it to both the Holy Hour and the meeting. Feel free to bring a snack to share, and bring your notebook and pen. Let Marijanna know if you are coming or not so that she'll know how many people to prepare for. We will surely have a great time, so hope to see you all there!!!

So, I'm still planning on having the Homework night tommorrow, (Wednesday February, 24th) for those who are interested. Just let me know how many are coming. Hey everyone! Hope you're having a great week at school. I just wanted to let you know that:
1. We recieved a DVD player from Paul & Cindy Mello. I'll be picking it up this week. Please say a prayer for them and everyone who has supported us. I also recieved two other very generous offers to purchase a DVD player for us. One from Arnie & Paula Briden and one from our dear friend Frances. Please pray for them as well and thank them for their generosity in supporting us.

Ice Skating

On Friday, February 19th, during school vacation, we are going to be going Ice Skating at Hetland Rink. It is $5 for the entrance fee and $4 to rent skates. We are not sure of the time yet, but it should be somewhere around 12:30-1:30 and we will stay there for an hour or two, after that we will go for pizza, then 4:15 adoration at St. Anthony's, and 5:15 mass. After Mass there will be a movie night at the DeSouza's house, the movie will be Forever Strong. If you can't make it to one thing than you can always just come to one of the events, such as, just ice skating or just the movie night. Hope all of you can make it!!!

Prayer Night

This coming Tuesday, February 9th, the Knights of Columbus are hosting their monthly Prayer Night. It starts at 7:00 pm and lasts about forty minutes, this will be followed by some social time downstairs in the hall. Hope to see you all there.
